#MSU has an administration that is good at keeping silent about problems on campus. We've seen this with Larry Nassar, Bill Strampel, and others. But they're also good at silencing students. As signers of my petition know, MSU "shut me up" by threatening to out a friend of mine as bisexual in the 1990s when he ran for the Owen Graduate Association student government on an anti-Residence Life platform. The Residence Life staff in the dorm responded by violating his First Amendment rights. They charged the candidate, and all who were displaying his campaign flyer with "violations of the fire code" for not having his campaign sign "properly laminated" to his door. They ripped his sign. which criticized MSU administrators/staff, off the door and tossed it. As then-President of the Owen Graduate Association, I sent the letter below to EVERY student in Owen Hall who had materials taped to their door in an identical fashion--to determine whether ResLife was enforcing the fire code or harassing a student and violating his free speech rights. Guess what... only the students displaying the campaign poster were sanctioned. Please continue to distribute my petition--and sign it if you haven't.
