The Detroit Free Press is recounting that Lou Anna Simon said she believed Dean Bill Strampel was "merely a Boor." The article doesn't mention the three times that I'm aware of that faculty women and staff members complained to her office WHEN SHE WAS PRESIDENT--NOT PROVOST regarding the Dean's behavior. I'm not in a position to speak beyond the facts I know... but those are as follows: After women complained to Simon on multiple occasions, SHE DID NOTHING. Even if the harassment was merely verbal, SHE ALLOWED IT TO PERSIST. This is what one calls a hostile work environment. By doing nothing, she PERSONALLY put MSU in a position to be sued for harassment that created a hostile work environment... Of course it doesn't surprise me. When the student government I was on in the Graduate Hall complained about student safety issues--including a dorm director that was trolling students for sex, and for Residence Life's complete failure to intervene in a suicide attempt of which they had been WARNED THREE DAYS IN ADVANCE, Student Affairs staff reporting to VP Moses Turner threatened to out me as gay to shut me up. And when that didn't quite work, they threatened to out someone I had been intimate with. AGAIN. Sexual harassment of the worst sort--and NO INTERVENTION OR CORRECTIVE ACTION TAKEN WHEN THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE WAS INFORMED. Please sign and share my petition w/ others, and encourage them to sign. MSU really needs to be held accountable, and they need to take actions that will ensure that the abuse it has sanctioned and covered up in the past NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN. Thank you.
