Maya Mor started this petition to MSHSL board members

Dear MSHSL board members and all reading this:

Today's vote against holding fall post-section play is very disappointing and also seems to contradict recent decisions made by the board in regards to other sports and competitions.

The decision to cancel the MSHSL Cross Country State Championships specifically was apparently made without considering the repercussions it would have on the runners' entire well-being while also taking the easiest path, not the correct one in my opinion. This decision is perplexing to the entire running community as we have safely been able to compete in regular season meets, conference jamborees, and will be competing in sections meets later this month. The format used throughout the entire season has been the perfect way to provide runners with a season while also keeping athletes, coaches, families, and officials safe.

Unlike other sports, organizing a state meet for cross country runners would be rather simple as we could use the same format we have been using: seed teams based on performance in the regular season, divide them up into groups of three teams based on their seed, and compile results after everyone has raced. Another extremely important fact that differentiates cross country from other fall sports is that our championship is only a one day event (that can be split into multiple days for boys and girls as well as the A and AA divisions if needed). It also does not require an indoor facility.

Running has provided each cross country athlete with an escape from the stress of daily life in the uncertain times we are living in. The support of our teammates and coaches has been crucial. Lots of us have used each race to find a sense of purpose, and our hard work these past couple weeks has given us a piece of normality. The` MSHSL Cross Country State Championships is the culmination of the blood, sweat, and tears we have invested in this sport and the moment when we get to unite with the top athletes in the state to demonstrate our athletic excellence. Minnesota currently has three AA girls teams ranked in the top 10 nationally as well as many other nationally ranked teams and individuals. A state championship will help us make a statement about the extensive running talent in the state. Taking this meet away means taking away the most important thing runners across the state have been looking forward to and hopefully will be revisited.

MSHSL recently revisited the initial decisions about football and volleyball and just today granted our request to have 7 players per team run in Sections. This demonstrates the power our voices can have to win back our sport. To the athletes, coaches, and families: from the bottom of my heart and the hearts of runners all around the state, I beg you to sign and share this petition. Let's fight to get back our state meet!
