Minister of State for Home Affairs, Mr. Kiren Rijiju had stated in the Lok Sabha that “The US does not have any document related to Netaji” on 26 April 2016. Now Ms. Sushma Swaraj, the External Affairs Minister, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha to a query posed by Trinamool MP Mr. Sukhendu Sekhar Ray is saying that the US had rebuffed India’s request for declassification of files related to Subhash Chandra Bose, claiming that a search through “widely dispersed” records would be impractical.
Why did Mr. Kiren Rijiju make a false statement earlier?
Will the mystery over the fate of the tallest leader of the Indian freedom struggle remain unresolved just because the US is not interested to undertake "extensive research" on Netaji? If the US provides access to its repositories, then Indian scholars can undertake research with GOI funded projects.
Ms. Sushma Swaraj states that UK has said that around 62 files are available on the website of National Archives and British Library. Why isn't the GOI acquiring the copies of those files for our National Archives and making them available to researchers? Is the copying cost of £8.24 per file too high for the government to bear?
Why isn't the GOI acquiring copies of the declassified Japanese files that are supposed to have been transferred to their archive, and making them available at the National Archives for research? Although they seem to say nothing beyond the false plane crash story, still they need to be studied. It appears Tokyo has conveyed that it cannot make a special exception to expedite declassification of three additional files that it possesses. Japan certainly cannot have ONLY FIVE FILES, they are lying!
The most important of all, Russia is still in denial mode.
Replies are awaited from Myanmar and Singapore. Germany has claimed that all its documents are in public domain, Austria has found none and Italy's response is not known.
If things go on in this way, the Netaji mystery will never be solved. The GOI is either not willing to solve it or clearly there is a lack of competency in dealing with the matter.
The people of this country must realize that the time to solve this mystery is NOW and rise for the cause. The GOI needs to be compelled to "develop the will" to solve the mystery. Unless a mechanism is designed to systematically work towards the resolution of the mystery, we will never come to know what really happened to Netaji as he did not die in the plane crash on 18 August 1945 in Taihoku, in fact there was no plane crash at all.
