Students Of Bournside started this petition to Mr. Steven Jeffries (Cheltenham Bournside School and Sixth Form Centre)

Since the change in Headteacher, Bournside has become more controlled. Mr Jeffries has come to the school, seemingly with the purpose of overhauling and erasing every trace of our previous headteacher. Whether it is changing the school motto, limiting technology use or not interacting with students during the day, Mr Jeffries has changed and disrupted our school life majorly.

The main issue at hand is the use of technology on the school site. Previously, Mr Burton had implemented a no phones or wires inside rule. This was accepted by many as a good compromise. However, this was recently tightened. With an apparent dislike for the use of technology and a strong belief that we must be learning at all times, Mr Jeffries has restricted the use of phones, wires and even school provided iPads. This has limited students in their school and homework and stopped us using the small amount of free time we have to do what we enjoy. Apps on iPads have also been limited to a very narrow and restrictive selection of what the school deems to be ‘educational’. This has meant that we can no longer use any apps that are ‘fun’. This ban has also impacted learning. This new level of control feels like we are, as one parent of a Year 10 student said, ‘as if we were in a prison’. The reason for these new policies seems to be that we no longer ‘look each other in the eye’, ‘students gather around iPads’ and ‘we are social creatures’. These reasons do not feel valid as iPads are often used to laugh about, help others with homework or to show someone school work. Photos were also provided by Mr Jeffries of students clustered around iPads. These photos may also be slightly biased as they appear to be year 7s having just got their iPads a few weeks/months ago. As I’m sure you’ll agree, this is very exciting and most people who have got an iPad will remember being enthralled with it. Therefore, we do not feel like there is any valid reason for this change other than a dislike of technology and to remove any remnants of Mr Burton.

Therefore, we suggest a solution for this situation. We would like to propose that we return to our original, ‘inside during the day phones and wires must be away’ rule. We believe that this would be a healthy compromise that benefits and pleases all parties involved. As a student, experiencing the current rules, I believe that this is the best possible solution and I’m sure that most will agree.
