Democracy or Hypocrisy? Pick one Tech!

The Issue

With this petition, we hope to have a re-election across all grades at B.T.H.S., so that all students can be aware of their right to vote and their right to run for office. This year, 2020, the sole way to be informed about class president elections were through e-mail. Many of us aren't able to check our emails so often, which undermines our involvement in important school events, like the class election. Not to mention that the e-mails rarely ever acknowledged the election, and if they did, it was earlier on in the year, and not stressed enough.

As a Democracy at Brooklyn Tech, elections are beyond important to the student body; ultimately the person elected for President and Vice President must be someone you have faith in to help represent your grade. Being in the midst of so many major issues in society, like a global pandemic, is no excuse for the lack of democracy and representation of Tech's students. In such a huge school of about 6,000 students, elections are a way for us to express ourselves and opinions, whether it's to run for a position or to vote.

This year, many students weren't fully conscious of the elections, in terms of how to run, how to vote, and when to do it all. Some ways that we can inform all students on the re-election is by requiring all teachers to remind everyone in the beginning of every class, and in the end if there's time. Announcements about the election should also be said inside the building everyday, for all the blended-learning students to be informed. Another suggestion on how we can enlighten students about the election is by sending an email everyday a month before the election only regarding information on said election - no other announcement should be attached to that one email.

A Democracy is a government that focuses on the awareness of voices that are both central and marginal, therefore it should be a priority for all 6,000 students to be made aware of the class president/S.G.O. elections at Brooklyn Technical High School!
