As everyone is aware not all disabilities are visible; there are many students at Glyn who suffer from specific learning disabilities such as dyxpraxia and dyslexia. I strongly believe that these students are currently being discriminated against by Glyn School policies which require some modification. 

The current options for Year 8 students, discriminate and disadvantage students who have specific learning disabilities, many of whom will have difficulty learning another language. Using myself as a case study, I received 11 years of speech therapy in order to get my speech to where it is today. As you can appreciate, learning another language in 5 years without consistent 1 to 1 tutoring would be impossible. The current option blocks at Glyn push all students towards an English Baccalaureate (Triple, a MFL, and History and Geography). As I understand the curent situation, if you choose not to take a MFL then you will be forced to choose between PE BTEC Media BTEC or construction BTEC. These subject choices make a student with a specific learning disability appear not academically focused or capable and potentially unintelligent, when in reality they simply struggle with Languages. Surely this is not a mindset or philosophy that we want to encourage at Gkyn School when we have high aspirations and expectations for all students?

Students with learning disabilities already have their options limited and there is no reason to limit their options further. 

This idea was put forward at a Glyn parliment meeting but failed to be seriously considered, which could be argued is an act of discrimination in its self.

Please consider joining me in fighting disability discrimination at Glyn School. A good first step is to sign a petition yourself and pass it around your form rooms to gather support for this important and moral cause.
