Help West Fork School District Change the Dress Code

The Issue

Here at West Fork High-school, teachers (mostly male teachers) are dress-coding students for showing their shoulders, legs, chest, stomach, and other normal areas that everyone has on their bodies. This has been going on for way too long and we need to make a change. Schools use the argument that showing these body parts are considered a distraction to boys and the learning environment. This is justifying rape culture and is teaching young girls that they have to be modest around men. I’m tired of this misogyny. I believe that by taking time out of a female student’s day to make them change for showing even the slightest bit of skin is unacceptable. It not only makes these girls uncomfortable and embarrassed, it completely ruins their entire day. It’s so unnecessary to go through all of this all because they’re “shoulders are distracting.” It should be completely unacceptable to make a student change out of her tank top when it’s hot outside, she was just trying to be comfortable. For me, I want to be able to go to school happy in what i’m wearing, and not have the fear of being made uncomfortable by the main male teacher who is dress-coding these young girls. When I’m happy with what I’m wearing, it has a positive affect on not only how i perform at school but also my mental health. Teachers need to stop disregarding students mental health because it’s so important. If you took the time to read this I am asking that you please help us make a change, not only me but a lot of people in my school would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
