We want to achieve test exemptions for those with good grades and good attendance.

The Issue

Students at Chico High School would like to be exempt from semester tests if they have the required standard for grades and attendance. Students work hard to achieve good grades and good attendance and we believe that should come with some rewards, but we know that exemptions are a privilege. We’re pushing for the policy regarding testing to remain as it has been for the past few years.

There are many good reasons why exemptions should be an option. The possibility for exemption creates an incentive for students to strive for better attendance and better grades. However, we do understand that there are no exemptions in life, but we ask that they let us enjoy our childhood while we have it. Finals create unneeded stress on students and even on the teachers who have to give them. We could better spend our time learning new material rather than spend it reviewing things we’ve already learned and been tested over.

In addition to the previous points made, we also have a multitude of students taking dual credit courses this year. In these college classes, finals are taken before the time of our semester tests for high school. This leads to countless students sitting in a class during those testing periods doing nothing. Finals also create extra strain on student athletes due to the fact that they have practice after school and could even have a game during finals week, but now they also have the added burden of studying for 8 tests. This burden of 8 tests also rests on the shoulders of every other student at Chico High School.
