The Issue

American Psychological Association. (2019, March 15). Mental health issues increased significantly in young adults over last decade: Shift may be due in part to rise of digital media, study suggests. This shows that mental health has been a problem in today's generation thus far. As there is an increase exposure of wider demographics in each age group there can be misjudgment of where limitations are should be.

For example an R-13 movie being shown in cinemas containing very graphic portrayals of suicide and self-harm. With this, we raise the concern over such irresponsible portrayals as this may lead to potentially triggering reactions from its viewers. According to  Till, Tran, Voracek, Niederkrotenthaler, & Sonneck (2014), suicide portrayals in fictional media can be linked to suicide and self-harm behavior in real life. Coupled with the fact that more than 2,500 Filipino suicide cases were reported since 2012, the release of this movie is of serious concern because of the possible harm that it may cause especially to those suffering from mental health conditions. It encourages these acts to happen, even though it is right to label this as a R-13 movie or not.

The Movie and Television Review And Classification Board (MTRCB) should consider these into account especially so that most teenagers today has problems with their mental health.

  • There should be proper viewing of materials shown in the movie.
  • Details of trigger warnings shown before the movie starts, shown in trailers or descriptions of the given movie.
  • Availability of staff to help an individual cope with triggers while or after watching the movie.
  • Taking necessary precaution of the audience who view the movie.
