Move the ferry terminal from Picton to Clifford Bay

Move the ferry terminal from Picton to Clifford Bay
The issue
We need your support to encourage the Government to properly consider Clifford Bay as a ferry terminal and port before it makes any binding contractual commitments to rebuilding a new wharf in Picton.
Clifford Bay is one hour closer to Christchurch by road and 1.5 hours closer to Wellington by ferry, effectively bringing the North and South Islands 2.5 hours closer together. This would deliver major benefits for both passengers and freight. Travellers would enjoy an easier drive with less fatigue, or a simpler and shorter train journey. Ferry operators would be able to offer more services and greater choice, thanks to a shorter sailing time.
With reduced crossing times, ferries could complete more than three return journeys per day, effectively doubling service capacity and productivity and better meeting peak demand during holiday periods.
Clifford Bay also offers ample flat land for future growth, creating new jobs for Marlborough and boosting tourism to wine country and Kaikōura. By contrast, Picton is difficult to access, requiring travel over two mountain passes and through narrow, constrained terrain. Tragically, an average of nearly three people lose their lives each year on this stretch of road. Relocating the ferry terminal to Clifford Bay would allow Picton to be restored and revitalised, helping it flourish as a world-class eco-tourism destination.
Ferries operating from Clifford Bay would save an estimated 50,000 tonnes of fuel every year compared with Picton operations. This would significantly reduce emissions and help protect the fragile coastal ecosystems of Queen Charlotte Sound—a major win for the environment.
A Clifford Bay terminal would also lead to a significant increase in trade between the islands. Lower transport costs would reduce the cost of moving goods, helping to lower the cost of living for all New Zealanders.
The time is right for Clifford Bay. The project was fully consented in 2007, and it is not too late for the Government to approve it again.
Sign our petition to save taxpayers, ratepayers, and consumers from an expensive rebuild at Picton—and to secure a better, faster, safer solution for the 21st century.
