Move on homeless individuals from public spaces in Clontarf
The issue
If we stay silent, we send the message that this behaviour is acceptable in our community. This issue is not just an inconvenience—it is a genuine safety concern for residents, children, and women in Clontarf. We have already seen serious incidents, including an elderly man being attacked with a pole in a public bathroom last year.
As a resident of Clontarf, I've always cherished the natural beauty and community atmosphere this area provides. Our public parks, waterways, and communal areas like parking spaces and BBQ areas are cherished not only by those of us who live here but also by visitors who appreciate the charm and hospitality of Clontarf.
However, the recent increase in the number of homeless individuals occupying these public spaces has created challenges, affecting the safety, accessibility, and cleanliness of these areas. Residents have reported reduced ability to use the parks, with park amenities such as BBQ areas and playgrounds often occupied or in disarray. Moreover, there are concerns around safety with an increase in anti-social behavior and littering, issues which are now spreading to parking areas and water lines.
While homelessness is a complex and sensitive issue that requires compassionate solutions, the current situation is impacting our community’s quality of life. We believe that it is the responsibility of local authorities to ensure that public spaces remain safe and accessible for all while supporting individuals in need with suitable accommodations and resources.
Therefore, we are urging the Council of Moreton Bay, Queensland and Federal government to take immediate action by providing the necessary social services and housing options for homeless individuals, and to enforce local ordinances that prohibit prolonged occupation of public spaces. Collaborative efforts with social agencies can offer homeless individuals the support they need, while maintaining our community’s vibrancy and safety.
This petition is crucial in urging local officials to address the problem effectively, with a commitment to both compassion and the well-being of Clontarf's residents. Let’s work together to restore our parks and public spaces, so they remain a source of pride and joy for everyone in Clontarf.
Please sign this petition to address the needs of our community and keep our public spaces safe, clean and available to enjoy.
