The Issue

Brighter future leanderisd? This is it.

Recently, I experienced the benefits of a later start time for school due to a snow storm that led to a delayed schedule. This change allowed me to feel more prepared and less stressed in the morning. Waking up really early has been a constant struggle for me, as it likely is for many students in the Leander Independent School District. It's time we consider the well-being and performance of our high school students by implementing later start times.

Numerous studies have shown that when school start times align more closely with adolescents' natural sleep patterns, students benefit greatly. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, later start times are associated with better academic performance, improved mental health, and overall higher quality of life for students. When students are well-rested, they're better equipped to absorb information and participate actively in their education.

Leander ISD has a unique opportunity to lead the way in Texas by shifting high school start times to 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. This adjustment won't just benefit students; it will also have positive effects on teachers and parents. Teachers will have students who are more alert and ready to engage in classroom activities, and parents will experience less stressful mornings and potentially fewer tardiness issues.

The school board of Leander ISD has the authority to change bell schedules. By voting to delay start times, they can bring about significant improvements in our educational environment. Given the compelling research and the positive feedback from both parents and students during the recent snowstorm delay, the time for this change is now.

Sign this petition to urge the Leander ISD school board to move high school start times to between 9 and 10 a.m. It’s a change that can help redefine educational success for our students and foster a healthier, more productive community. Let's prioritize what truly matters—our students' well-being and educational success.

With this request I suggest that we dont extend school days and instead extend our school years slightly to accommodate for this change.
