The Issue

As a working parent, I find it growingly difficult to celebrate the holiday loved by many of us - Halloween - with my kids. The magic of Halloween with its trick-or-treating traditions, costumed gatherings, and time spent exploring our neighborhood needs to be fully appreciated, not rushed through or cut short because of work or school commitments the next day.

Currently, Halloween takes place on October 31, regardless of what day of the week this date falls on. This makes it challenging for working parents and school-aged children to fully revel in the joy of this holiday if it lands on a work or school night. We suggest that Halloween should instead be held on the last Saturday of October annually. This change would allow families more time to celebrate together and could possibly make trick-or-treating safer due to earlier hours in the daylight.

The National Safety Council reports that children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Shifting this holiday to a Saturday would allow families to trick-or-treat during earlier, safer daylight hours.

Join us to make a change that values the safety and joy of our children, and provides families the best possible Halloween experience. Let the celebration of Halloween become more than a rushed weekday activity sandwiched between work and school hours. Sign this petition to move Halloween to the last Saturday of October.
