The Issue

Our family, like many others, has cherished the tradition of Halloween. We've seen generations - our children and grand-children - donned in costumes and brave the neighborhood streets for trick or treating. However, this joyous adventure has become increasingly hazardous over the years. The problem is simple - it gets dark too early and most Halloween celebrations happen on weekdays when people return from work well after sundown. Many neighborhoods lack sufficient street lighting, further exacerbating the issue.

Altering the day of Halloween to the last Saturday of October every year could address these safety concerns. Celebrations and trick or treating could start earlier in the day, during daylight, and families would not have the extra pressure of workday scheduling.

According to a report from Safe Kids Worldwide, twice as many kids are killed while walking on Halloween than any other day of the year. Moving the holiday to a more convenient and safe day could hopefully reduce this unfortunate statistic, making the event safer for our children to roam the neighbourhoods.

Consider this not only from a safety perspective but from a community-building one. With more people free from workday commitments, we could see increased participation and spirit. Halloween could more readily become a community celebration with parades, parties, and events that can be safely enjoyed by everyone.

Join us in supporting the move of Halloween to the last Saturday of October every year. Let's make the change for safer, longer, and more community-involved celebrations. Please sign and share this petition.
