Demand the Resignation of Principal Judith Caviston from Mt St Joseph Academy in Flourtown
The Issue
In light of recent events and the distressing accounts of current students and alumae of Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Flourtown, PA describing the microaggressions and outright racism descibed as taking place at the high school, it goes without saying in our opinion that Judith Caviston should no longer hold the position of Principal or any other position at Mount. It is our assessment that she is unfit to be in a position of power when in public opinion she has exhibited consistent racist behavior and a blatant disregard for the mental health and emotional well-being of the black, white, and students of color in her care.
In our viewpoint, from her arrival at the Mount in the fall of 2009 she has only shown to demonstrate a complete disregard for the mental health and well-being of the students while also exhibiting racist tendacies towards black and POC students and their parents. In our judgement, she has contributed to a culture of hatred at the school, including inappropriately touching a black student's hair, ignoring and allowing systematic bullying (some of it race-related) and not adhering to a "no-tolerance policy" but rather offering incredibly lenient punishments to the offenders who from appearances went on to continue their bullying, gas-lighting and ignoring students who approach her with real concerns about these issues, irrevocably damaging the mental health of students with her horrible approach to mental heath, and more (according to accounts of students and alumni).
We believe she is beyond the point of change and Mount St. Joseph Academy cannot progress in any plans for diversity and inclusiveness with her still in charge. The improvements alumnae and students want to see in the Mount in terms of offering a place were all women, especially black and WOC, can feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment, will never be properly implemented or enforced with her as the principal in our assessment from our perspective.
Not only has she not offered any official and sincere form of apology or remorse (although we think it is too late for that to matter after the years of abuse we believe she inflicted and allowed privileged students to inflict on other students with minimal repercussions), we have seen that she has appeared to exhibit the same toxic behavior year after year based on current students' accounts, and has not seemed to improve.
From our standpoint, calling for the immediate removal of Judith Caviston is just one step in a long road ahead in making the high school a more inclusive and welcoming environment for black and POC students, but it's a step that needs to be taken in order for the Mount to be true to their word in providing a safe and welcoming environment for ALL students.
Black Lives Matter.
