The Issue

As more and more cyclists are starting to use the public roads. The roads NEED to be safer for both motorist and cyclists.

Motorists have faced many changes in the past decade with new regulations coming out ever so frequently. It’s time for the cyclist to have there regulations updated. Cyclists are the most vulnerable people on the roads, In 2016, 18,477 cyclists were injured in reported road accidents, including 3,499 who were killed or seriously injured. This figure will continue to rise especially with the rise of cyclists due to COVID-19, JustEat bikes, Deliveroo and many other food delivery services introducing bikes to the roads. Although the council have introduced separate lanes for cyclists, there has been countless occasions where cyclists have not been using there own lanes.
Did you know that cyclists are NOT required to wear a helmet, reflective clothing or have lighting on the bikes. Which is very dangerous as for motor vehicles which are substantially larger than a bicycle are legally required to have appropriate lighting and reflectors. Let alone, if a cyclist gets injured and unfortunately dies, motorists will see jail time of up to 10 years. Cyclists NEED to be taken seriously!

To make cycling experience safer, the following should be taken into consideration:

-Legal requirement to wear helmet, reflective clothing and appropriate lighting on bikes

-A cycling safety check on all bikes on the road (service and maintenance record)

-Liability insurance
