Motoring penalty fines should be for repeat offenders not people who have made a mistake.

The Issue

I recently accidentally went on the wrong side of a bollard in a city I am unfamiliar with. I was driving to hospital and had been diverted 3 times - so the road I was on wasn't even one I originally expected to be on.

I was issued a PCN for the 'offence' and charged £65.

The law in this country resolves around 'reasonableness'. Even for very serious offences there is significantly different outcome for people who accidentaly commit a crime and those who deliberately act to harm others.

Why does this not apply to motoring 'offences'?.

I believe a first 'offence' should always be met with a warning/advice notice. This would be reasonable. It's very easy these days to store information on computer so checking if it's a repeat offence would not be a problem.

Obviously if there is serious danger to other road users as a result of your actions then a penalty may become appropriate. In my case there wasn’t another moving vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist anywhere.

I know of many people who have been penalised in this way and they are all upset and poorer as a result. Driving is enough of a nightmare anyway without the imposition of petty fines.

Visiting a sick relative is stressful enough anyway without then being fined for making a harmless mistakes along the way. Please sign the petition to get the law changed. Thank you.
