Motion to implement later start for WWPRSD High School Students in Fall 2023

The Issue

As parents, students, and community members, we call for an immediate change in the start time of high schools to 8.30 am within the district. We believe that starting high school later in the day would greatly benefit our student’s health, well-being and academic success.

The current start time for WWPRSD High Schools is 7:40 am. Later high school start times are associated with:

1.            Improved physical and mental health

2.            Improved grades and test scores

3.            Better school attendance

4.            Better eating and hygiene habits

5.            Reduced disciplinary problems, drug use and violence.

New Jersey Department of Education has already carried out a study of school districts in this direction and there is currently a bill1 with the education committee advocating a later start for all schools that receive state aid.

With a 7:40 am start time, kids who take the bus to school have to wake up by 5.45 am to catch their bus by 7 am. This means that to be physically and mentally healthy, they need to be in bed by 9 pm. This is highly impractical due to teenage circadian rhythms, school work and extra-curricular activities. Many extracurricular activities for kids of this age don't end until 8 pm or even later.

We recognize that this change may present logistical challenges, such as transportation and scheduling, but we believe the benefits to our students far outweigh these challenges. The health and success of our students are a concern and now is the time to take bold action to prioritize this.

Help us express the importance of this cause by signing this petition and casting your vote of approval for a late school start.

If we all come together, voice our concerns and demand action, we can make a positive impact on the lives and future of our children and our community.

Please take a moment to sign the petition NOW!
