Morning Matters

Morning Matters
The Issue
Dear school administrators,
Many students across the Lammersville Unified School District are missing out on one of the most important meals of the day, breakfast. Current breakfast times are too short for many students to finish eating before class begins, especially those who have 1st period flex or who come late to campus.
Breakfast is proven to improve focus, energy, and academic performance. When students have enough time to eat, they start the day ready to learn and not distracted by hunger. Breakfast jumpstarts your metabolism and actually helps you burn more calories throughout the day. When you eat breakfast, you're telling your body that there are plenty of calories to be had for the day. When you skip breakfast, the message your body gets is that it needs to conserve rather than burn any incoming calories.
Many students rely heavily or depend on school meals as their main source of nutrition. The current breakfast schedule doesn't fully meet the needs of all students, especially those who arrive last at campus. Extending breakfast time until the end of the first period or even allowing teachers to give students a quick break to grab breakfast would ensure that everyone has the chance to start their day with energy and focus.
Additionally, students should learn the importance of a nutritious for outside of school. Healthy eating habits shouldn’t stop once the school bell rings. By understanding the value of a balanced breakfast, students can make better choices at home, on weekends, and even later in life. Learning how to prepare simple, nutritious meals helps build independence and long-term wellness. When students make healthy breakfast choices outside of school, they are more likely to have consistent energy, improved focus, and better moods throughout the day. Encouraging these habits early can lead to a lifetime of healthier routines and stronger overall well-being.
We are calling on LUSD administrators and school board members to extend breakfast times or offer additional morning meal opportunities that students can have a more nutritious breakfast. By making this small change, the district can help create a healthier and productive learning environment for all students!
