Preserve a Regionally Significant Wildlife Corridor: Stop Rezoning of Morayfield South

Preserve a Regionally Significant Wildlife Corridor: Stop Rezoning of Morayfield South
The issue
Rural residential land in Morayfield South currently forms a regionally important wildlife and native vegetation corridor linking Moreton Bay with rural land leading west to the D'aguilar Ranges. The area is currently a koala habitat, and also home to numerous native kangaroo, wallaby, possum, bat (including insect eating micro-bats), aquatic and bird species. The area also contains acid-sulphate soils that, if disturbed by development, could adversely affect waterways in the region including northern Moreton Bay. Preservation of the current rural residential zoning will also preserve the amenity of the area between the growing urban concentrations of Burpengary-Narangba and Morayfield-Caboolture.
The re-zoning of Morayfield South as emerging communities, from its current rural residential status, has been proposed by Moreton Bay Regional Council. This will facilitate its eventual conversion to urban land, with potential impacts that would be detrimental to the broader community in southeast Queensland.
The Council needs to be made acutely aware of the community's concerns for the environment and made to re-think its rezoning proposal. Development needs to be appropriately considered and sustainable.
The consultation period for submissions regarding the proposed regional plan closed 21 August, 2015. Many local residents objected to the council's proposal.
This petition remains open and will be submitted to Council when we get 100 signatures from people who respect the value and amenity of rural land and do not want to see self-interested developers destroy the environment of this region for their personal gain.
