More Turf Soccer Fields for South Brunswick Township
The Issue
Purpose
We, the undersigned residents of South Brunswick Township, respectfully petition the Township Council to authorize the planning, funding, and construction of additional artificial turf soccer fields. This petition reflects the growing demand for quality, year-round athletic facilities to support the thousands of youth and adult players who participate in soccer programs throughout our community.
Background
South Brunswick Township is home to a vibrant and growing soccer community served by the South Brunswick Soccer Club (In-town and Travel Divisions), the South Brunswick Adult Soccer League, and Township Recreation programs. The demand for field time consistently exceeds available supply, resulting in:
- Overcrowded field schedules with limited availability for practice and game time
- Inability to accommodate all youth players who wish to register
- Cancellations and postponements due to poor natural grass field conditions
- Missed opportunities to host regional tournaments that benefit local businesses
Benefits of Turf Fields
- Artificial turf fields offer significant advantages already demonstrated at Harvest Woods Park, Rowland Park, and Tall Timbers Park:
- Year-round play ability regardless of weather or season
- Immediate return to play following rain — no more cancellations
- Lower long-term maintenance costs (no mowing, fertilizing, or irrigation)
- Increased capacity — multiple sports and events can share a field in one day
- Safer playing conditions with studies showing reduced ankle injuries in youth
- Greater return on Township and Middlesex County Open Space funding
Our Request
We respectfully request that the Township Council take the following actions:
- Commission a formal field usage and demand assessment with local soccer organizations
- Identify suitable locations for at least two (2) new multi-use artificial turf fields
- Explore joint funding through Middlesex County Open Space Trust funds
- Establish a public timeline for planning, bidding, and construction
- Engage residents and sports organizations in the site selection and design process
South Brunswick Township has a proud history of investing in its parks and recreation infrastructure. The addition of artificial turf soccer fields is a necessary next step to serve our growing community. We trust that the Township Council will give this petition due consideration.
