More Trains to Stop at Southease Railway Station

More Trains to Stop at Southease Railway Station

The Issue

Southease Station is a key gateway for visitors exploring the South Downs Way, surrounding villages, and local businesses. It’s also a lifeline for commuters, students, and local workers. Yet, the station’s limited train service is holding back the community and discouraging the use of public transport.

Currently, only one train per hour stops at Southease, despite two trains passing through on the Lewes to Seaford line. This insufficient service—compounded by the removal of direct trains to London four years ago—makes it difficult for residents and visitors to rely on this essential public transport link. A more frequent service is needed to meet the growing demand.

Increasing the number of trains stopping at Southease to two per hour would significantly improve accessibility for everyone. Local residents would be more likely to use public transport, reducing road traffic and supporting sustainability efforts. This enhancement would also boost the footfall for local businesses like YHA South Downs and the nearby Physiotherapy Clinic, both of which are within walking distance of the station. Furthermore, Southease Station is vital for those visiting the South Downs National Park and accessing nearby villages along the river ouse, such as Southease, Rodmell, Piddinghoe Northease and Itford.

With bus services like the 123 from Newhaven to Lewes already reduced and limited train access this combined is forcing more people to use their cars on the extremely busy C7 and A26. It’s more important than ever to stand up for our community’s right to reliable public transport. By improving train frequency at Southease, we can ensure that the station remains viable, beneficial, and accessible to both locals and visitors.

We urge you to support our request to increase train services at Southease Station to two trains per hour. This simple change will enhance the quality of life for the entire community and safeguard access to the public transport network we all depend on. Thank you for your support.
