More Secure Military Housing Amenities
The Issue
Off base military housing such as some neighborhoods like Gateway Village, The Village at NTC, The Village at Serra Mesa, Silver Strand, Orleck Heights, Bayview Hills, etc. have a severe lack of safety standards set for neighborhoods and residents.
There is a severe lack of security patrol, lack of response, issues with speeding vehicles (children nearly getting hit— and there’s no ‘Children at Play’ signs anywhere, homeless populations harassing homes (approaching, banging on doors, stealing decorations, packages, etc.)
Considering we live in military communities and give most to nearly all of our housing allowance, the bare minimum to ask for is a genuine safe space and position to live in. Especially considering service members are consistently putting their lives at risk already just going to work, but are also targeted— just as first responders are, except we have obvious markers pointing us out as military housing.
These changes should and will include but are NOT limited to:
• Increased Security Patrol
• A Meeting with San Diego County regarding adding speed bumps into the neighborhoods
• Adding Children at Play signs and Slow Speeds
• Security Guard Checkpoints at Entry of Neighborhoods, not necessarily military but contracted.
Estimated costs would be minuscule in comparison to what companies like Liberty make from our BAH alone. Below I’ve listed personal stories that have been sent in to me from different residents scattered around San Diego County alone.
“One night at around 2 in the morning there was a homeless man who would not stop banging on our door and rattling the door knob trying to get in. It was just me and my two sons. Our panic button didn’t even work and security took over an hour to get there. SDPD didn’t even dispatch a unit to our home until hours later and military police don’t have jurisdiction apparently.” - NTC
”I think it was about four in the afternoon but out of nowhere these two young men thought it would be hilarious to launch rocks at our front window. Housing made us pay for it and we had to watch in horror as the glass just shattered and security didn’t even respond. At least the windows are double paned” - Serra Mesa
“I’ve had over $4,500 worth of things stolen off of my porch. I can get there within ten minutes of my package being delivered and it will still be gone. There’s no insurance or reimbursement for this but this is military housing and I feel like I live in downtown Chicago again” - Gateway
“I’ve had to YANK my kids back way too many times from cars going at least 30-40 through our neighborhood and rolling through stop signs” - Orleck Heights
“Considering we live right next to a school and have no signs really saying such is terrifying. We don’t have any speed bumps and are through a commercial area and the amount of times I, my children and others have almost been hit by careless drivers is terrifying” - Gateway
