The Issue

As a parent of a child with autism, I understand the challenges and heartbreak that comes with trying to find the right educational setting for my son. Right now, I am struggling to enrol my son in a specialist school because they are all over capacity. Our story is not unique; so many families in Essex are in the same difficult situation. The lack of available spaces in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) schools is a growing crisis, affecting numerous parents and their children.

Currently, the need for SEND-specific education in Essex far outweighs the available resources. With schools operating beyond their intended capacity, children with autism and other special educational needs may not receive the vital attention and tailored curriculum they require to thrive. Specialists in these schools are overworked, and educational outcomes could be compromised as children are not getting the focused care they need.

Statistics show a rising number of children diagnosed with autism and other special needs conditions, yet educational support and infrastructure have not kept pace. Families are left with limited options, often having to travel great distances or settle for inadequate support, which can negatively impact their child's development and overall well-being.

To address this urgent need, we are calling on local authorities, government agencies, and stakeholders to allocate more funding towards establishing new SEND school’s in Essex. This will not only alleviate the overwhelming demand on current schools but will also provide a space where our children can learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

I urge you to join me in advocating for these children and their families. Sign this petition to amplify our voice and urge decision-makers to act swiftly in providing the funds necessary to make the dream of new SEND school’s in Essex a reality. Our children deserve nothing less than the opportunity to succeed in an environment tailored for their needs.
