More Food, Less Booze – Dan Murphy’s Is Not the Right Fit”

More Food, Less Booze – Dan Murphy’s Is Not the Right Fit”
The issue
We, the undersigned residents and concerned members of the Botanic Ridge community, formally oppose the application for a packaged liquor licence for a Dan Murphy’s store at 3 Hummingbird Drive, Botanic Ridge.
Our objection is based on the following grounds under the Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 (Vic):
1. Impact on Local Amenity (Section 40)
The proposed liquor outlet is in close proximity to a childcare centre, which is highly inappropriate. The introduction of a large-scale alcohol retailer poses risks to the peaceful, family-focused nature of the estate and may result in:
Increased traffic, noise, and late-night activity
Antisocial behaviour and public drinking
Reduced sense of safety for families and children
Littering or vandalism near public and residential spaces
2. Public Interest Concerns (Section 38)
We believe this application is not in the public interest because:
There is already an existing bottle shop serving the estate
Adding a Dan Murphy’s would oversaturate the area with alcohol availability
A Dan Murphy’s may promote excessive consumption due to low pricing and bulk sales
The land could be used for better community benefit (e.g. a café, dessert shop, or grocer)
3. Community Values and Better Land Use
Our estate was designed as a safe, quiet, family-oriented community. A large liquor outlet does not align with those values. A food-based business would serve families, children, and the wider community far more effectively and positively.
Conclusion
We respectfully request that Liquor Control Victoria decline the liquor licence application for this Dan Murphy’s, and instead support developments that uphold community wellbeing, amenity, and public interest.
