Moratorium on the Installation of New Artificial Turf Fields Owned by the Town of Natick

Moratorium on the Installation of New Artificial Turf Fields Owned by the Town of Natick
The Issue
Support our effort to see if the Town of Natick will vote to enact a 3-year moratorium on artificial turf fields.
Event: Forum to discuss the moratorium and artificial turf on October 16, 2025 at FCC (First Congregational Church) in Natick from 7pm – 830pm. Light refreshments will be served.
In Natick’s most recent Capital Improvement Program, Natick is proposing to spend $2.2M to replace the JV grass field with an artificial turf field. We need a moratorium for our community to access the health and environmental risks and financial impact that artificial turf poses.
HEALTH CONCERNS
- Microplastics
- PFAS
- Lead
COST
- 2–3x more expensive than natural grass, including maintenance.
ENVIRONMENT
- Non-renewable
- CO₂
- Microplastics & PFAS
Protect our health, save money, and safeguard the environment

The exact wording of our proposed advisory for the Town of Natick is:
Move that Town Meeting adopt an advisory for all town departments to abide by a three-year moratorium on the construction of artificial turf fields on town property for a period of three years from January 1, 2026-December 31, 2028. This Advisory shall not apply to the installation or use of synthetic/artificial turf in indoor facilities. An indoor facility is one that has a permanent roof enclosed by permanent non-removable, non-retractable walls and doors. This Advisory will not affect the use or maintenance of the existing three artificial turf fields at Cole Athletic Field (Operated by Parks and Recreation, 179 Boden Lane), Memorial Field (Natick High School, 92-108 West St.), and Kennedy Middle School (165 Mill St.). This Advisory on a moratorium may be extended upon its expiration by a majority vote of Town Meeting.
