Montclair State has refused to provide Muslim students with general accommodations for the month of Ramadan and for the Eid holiday. When I reached out to the University to voice my concern, I was dismissed.

Montclair State prides itself on having a diverse student body. However diversity isn’t just about changing how educational institutions look, it’s about changing however educational institutions function. It reflects poorly on the university that they choose to accommodate some students from certain religious backgrounds and not others. For example, just as it is unfair to ask a Christian student to complete an exam on the day of Christmas, it is unfair to ask the Muslim student completes their exam on Eid. Students of all religious backgrounds deserve the same respect and should receive accommodations if needed.

As mentioned above, I reached out to the administration and was met with a lackluster response. I demand that our university does better. Please sign this petition in solidarity with students from diverse religious backgrounds. I will be presenting this petition to the Montclair State administration. It’s time to make a change.
