Reverse the Pass/Fail only grading option for Masuk High School Students in Q4 2020.

The Issue

Recently, with the blessing of the Monroe Board of Education, Masuk High School implemented a grading policy to address distance learning necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic.  This policy grades all students on only Pass/Fail.  There is no option for the graded assignments, effort and deliverables to positively influence a student's GPA.  We residents, students and parents believe that the policy takes a "one size fits all" approach to public education which simply has no place in any school district.  With an entire quarter of work left to be done and many students rising to the challenges presented in these unprecedented times, we believe hard work and effort are invalidated with this approach.  Many neighboring school districts have been able to implement more balanced options ensuring that no student is disadvantaged and allowing for accommodations to be made for those who need them.  They all provide students with the chance to work hard and improve their chances to achieve their future goals.  Further, because our policy does not align with neighboring school districts, it leaves parents and students without the ability to make the best choice for them as they pursue post-secondary goals and has the potential to disadvantage our students in competitive college admissions and scholarship searches.

We propose, that the district immediately review neighboring polices and adopt its own balanced approach - giving parents and students choice.  Because an adjusted policy would have to be implemented mid-quarter, after messaging to the contrary, students wishing to revisit incomplete or insufficient work that was submitted during the period perceived to be "pass/fail" should be given that opportunity.
