Stop the use of greyhound dogs in university medical research

The issue

Monash University and the University of Melbourne boast an international reputation for research excellence. However, many of their research experiments involve the use of animals.

Monash University has recently engaged in medical research which involved anaesthetising twelve greyhounds, placing them on ventilation, followed by suffocation leading to death, and heart removal. The dogs’ hearts were later transplanted, after which the dogs were monitored for four hours and then killed for a second time.

The University of Melbourne experimented on six greyhounds as part of a dental research project in May last year. The experiment involved administering an anaesthetic, removing teeth and installing dental implants. After three months, the dogs were killed so that their jaws could be removed for analysis.

Greyhounds are often sourced as ‘wastage’ from the racing industry and have therefore already suffered immense cruelty.

Further, studies have cast doubt on the efficacy of animal use in research which may lead to misleading and potentially harmful effects on humans. Yet, traditional methods have become ingrained in the medical profession to the point that alternatives are simply ignored.
