Change Monash Council's decision to fell 100+ trees in GlenTower Drive.

Having lived in Glen Waverley for 30+ years I absolutely love the leafy streets. They encourage owls, possums and other native fauna plus providing lovely shade and aesthetics not to mention their use in producing much needed oxygen for all of the extra Monash residents that call this part of the world home. In Glen Tower Drive, 85% of the trees that line the nature strips will be felled by the council. This is part of the council's "tree strategy". It is nothing short of disgraceful. It is costing $250,000 - your rates at work. The council will be replacing the trees with 1 particular variety of native tree in a 30cm pot (seedlings). Three (3) streets in the city of Monash are having their trees obliterated. Why?? What for? The trees are safe, they are a beautiful mix of native and European trees and they add value that I don't think you can put a price on.
Every resident needs to know this. The mindless decisions of a few Councillors ( remember we elected them to represent us) will change the entire landscape for the worse. Please share with everyone you know and help us fight the council on this one. It is not OK to cut down trees that are 50+ years old.

UPDATE – STREET TREES IN GLEN TOWER DRIVE, GLEN WAVERLEY I am writing to advise you that Council will not be proceeding with our initial plan to remove 100-plus street trees from Glen Tower Drive. Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback to Council on this matter. On behalf of Council staff, I sincerely apologise for the error we made in proposing the removal of so many street trees. We recognise that we should have applied more rigour in our assessment of whether tree removals/replacements should have been undertaken on the scale proposed in Glen Tower Drive. All of the trees in the street were assessed earlier this week and there are four trees in Glen Tower Drive that require removal for health and safety reasons. There are about 15 trees that are in decline and from our arborist’s perspective, these trees need to be removed within the next five years. We would like to talk to you about these trees and give you an opportunity to be involved in deciding the next steps. Please come along to a community meeting: Where: Monash Civic Centre (293 Springvale Rd, Glen Waverley) When: Saturday 25 March 2017, at 10am There is no need to RSVP; just turn up. For those unable to attend, we will write to all residents in the area following the meeting to summarise the discussion. We will also put this summary of the discussion on Council’s website at: www.monash.vic.gov.au/glen-tower-drive-trees Again, I apologise for any distress this proposal has caused any of our community members and I thank everyone who has provided feedback to us. Our intention with the Street Tree Strategy is actually to improve and strengthen Monash’s tree canopy over time. We will be planting more street trees across the city and they will be of a better quality. In other streets across Monash, residents would like to see street trees replaced, for various reasons including declining health, impact on infrastructure, more appropriate species etc. However, before any removal/replacement programs are chosen in future, Council will be applying much more rigour to our initial assessment than has been applied here. Council is happy to answer any questions you may have about this matter or the Street Tree Strategy more generally. If you would like to discuss further, please contact Phillip Plumb, Manager – Horticultural Services, on 9518 3720 or at phillipp@monash.vic.gov.au We hope to see you at the meeting if you are able to make it. Yours sincerely PETER PANAGAKOS Acting - Chief Executive Officer
