Modify Traffic Light Timing at Rt 46 and Perry Street Intersection

The Issue

As a resident profoundly affected by daily traffic congestion, I am calling for a pressing change to the operation of the traffic light at the intersection of Rt 46 and Perry Street. The heavy traffic during morning hours has turned into a persisting issue causing long wait times, especially during morning drop-offs at East Dover school. The light's green phase is too short, contributing to a slow moving traffic flow that is inefficient and frustrating for commuters.

An investigation into signal timing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that increasing the length of the green signal at heavy traffic intersections can decrease traffic congestion significantly. Consequently, this minimizes the chance for crashes and enhances the overall safety for all road users (Retting et al., 2007, Journal of Safety Research).

We kindly request the Board of Education to pay attention to this concern and take prompt action to extend the duration of the green light at the Rt 46 and Perry Street intersection during morning hours. Unfortunately, when this concern was bought to their attention, it was redirected to Dover PD for a solution. Dover PD advised that the traffic light is controlled by NJDOT.  But Dover BOE has not reached out to NJDOT, as advised. This minor alteration could provide a significant improvement to the quality of life and safety of our community. Please sign this petition to show your support for this essential change.
