Modify Sacramento County Code for shade structures
The Issue
In Sacramento, we endure long, scorching summers where temperatures can easily soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, making the interior of parked cars dangerously hot. For many of us, especially senior citizens and families with young children, this situation poses real health risks every time we need to travel. Our current Residential County Code does not permit temporary shade structures in driveways, leaving countless residents without any recourse to protect our vehicles from extreme heat.
Many homes in our area lack covered parking spaces and without any relief, cars quickly become overheated during the late spring and summer months. This not only damages the vehicles but also creates an unhealthy environment for anyone entering them, with heat exhaustion and heatstroke being significant risks.
Prolonged exposure to intense heat can be detrimental to health, particularly for vulnerable groups like senior citizens and small children. Research shows that vehicular heatstroke is a serious concern, with interior car temperatures escalating to levels that can cause harm within just minutes. The absence of practical solutions to mitigate this problem is not just inconvenient—it's dangerous.
Allowing temporary shade structures, like canopies, in driveways during the hot months is a simple yet effective solution. These structures are affordable, easy to install, and can be safely secured without permanent modifications to existing property. Other communities have successfully implemented similar allowances without any negative impact on property values or neighborhood aesthetics.
By modifying the Sacramento Residential County Code, we can take an important step toward protecting the well-being of our residents. This petition seeks to amend current regulations to permit temporary shade structures in driveways between May and September, ensuring all residents can shield their cars from the brutal summer sun. We urge policymakers to address this urgent need and look forward to a future where our communities can thrive in safety and comfort.
Please join me in calling on Sacramento County officials to make this critical change. Sign the petition to support the health and safety of our community members during the hottest months of the year. Together, we can influence positive change and enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
