We are residents of Liberty County, GA, and our experience with the local ordinances has left us feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. We choose to live in the country for its peacefulness and the freedom to enjoy our property without constant interference. Yet recent ordinances are making it almost impossible for us to afford to live here.
Just recently, we received our second notice from the county, citing us for issues that were not mentioned the first time around and repeating violations we have already resolved. Among these issues is a project truck that my husband and son have been working on, which is registered and insured, and yet we have been ordered to remove it. This is not just inconvenient; it’s unjust.
Liberty County's current regulations require residents to pay for permits even for minor additions or changes to their property. This has resulted in legal and financial pressure on many of us, forcing some to consider leaving behind the homes they love. Additionally, we live on a road that isn't maintained by the county, which leaves us questioning their jurisdiction over our property management.
A peaceful rural life should not mean sacrificing financial stability due to exorbitant fees and potential court costs. These ordinances not only invade our lives but also challenge the very essence of living in a country setting—where privacy and autonomy are revered.
We are calling upon the Liberty County Commissioners to rethink these restrictive ordinances. We propose a revision of the current policies that consider the frustrations and financial limitations of residents. Implementing more transparent guidelines and affordable permitting processes would respect the intent of country living while still maintaining community standards.
