Modify Perry Township’s poultry ordinance requirements

Modify Perry Township’s poultry ordinance requirements
The Issue
My dear friend, a long-time resident of Massillon Perry, OH, had to face an unexpected challenge that has gripped our community's attention. She owns a small but beautifully maintained chicken coop that has become not just a part of her life, but an invaluable source of support in trying times. Dealing with significant health issues while caring for her mother battling cancer, the small flock of chickens she lovingly tends has been a source of comfort and a means of aiding her family's nutrition and well-being. However, due to a local ordinance mandating each resident must own at least an acre of land to keep chickens, she received a notice from the township demanding the removal of her chickens.
This ordinance, requiring one acre per household to host backyard chickens, serves more as an unnecessary burden than a practical regulation. Chickens, when responsibly reared without disruptive roosters and with adequate space — aligning with modern poultry husbandry guidelines — pose no threat or inconvenience to neighbors. Instead, they offer significant benefits, such as enriching local kids through 4-H scholarships and supplying fresh eggs to our community.
These birds contribute not only to personal health and financial stability but also foster educational opportunities for young people in agriculture. We need to revise this ordinance to reflect a fairer, more balanced approach that emphasizes responsible chicken ownership without severely restricting it based on blanket land requirements.
By signing this petition, we urge the local authorities of Massillon Perry, OH, to reevaluate and amend the existing ordinance, to allow residents who meet specified animal welfare and noise standards to keep backyard chickens even if they lack an acre of land. This change can support local families, promote education, and sustain our community's shared prosperity. Let's come together to make local regulatory changes that benefit us all. Please sign and support this much-needed initiative for our town!
