Modify Dress Code for Gwinnett County Schools
Why this petition matters
As in most schools, the dress code in Gwinnett County Schools discriminates and targets against females more than they do males. For instance, it’s stated clearly in the dress code that females are not to wear any shirts/blouses that expose any cleavage, shoulders, hips, waist, or midriff. For males, all that’s said about exposing areas above the waist is, “Boys are not allowed to wear sleeveless shirts.” Not only this, but when males do go against the only rule they’re given regarding shirts, they get away with it. Females do not. The point of this petition is not to imply that GCPS schools are slightly misogynistic, but to just modify these rules so we can all come to school worrying about our education more than our clothes. To improve these guidelines, we’d like to change some of them. Firstly, shoulders being exposed should not interrupt or disturb learning in any way. If a student/teacher cannot contain themselves, they should be taken out of the classroom. Not the person with a normal, human body part exposed. Tank tops, tube tops, crop tops, spaghetti straps, showing shoulders and midriff, etc should be permitted in the instance that it is not the students’ fault if someone cannot focus on learning and/or minding their business.
