Modify City Ordinance to Allow Ownership of Chickens on Smaller City Lots

Modify City Ordinance to Allow Ownership of Chickens on Smaller City Lots
The Issue
As a parent and lover of nature, I have personally experienced the benefits of raising fowl. Chickens are not only great pets that help educate children about responsibility and care, but they are also invaluable contributors to a sustainable lifestyle — offering natural, organic eggs and acting as non-chemical pest controllers. However, the current city ordinance only permits keeping chickens on lots larger than 2.5 acres, making it impossible for most city residents to enjoy these benefits. This strikes me as restrictive and unnecessary when many other cities in Minnesota do allow them on city lots. Comparable cities including Oakdale, Lake Elmo and Stillwater allow them, as well, but not limited to, St. Paul, Minneapolis and even Edina.
According to a study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, homegrown chickens are a much healthier food source, producing eggs with higher proportions of beneficial fatty acids and lower cholesterol amounts compared to commercial brands (NCBI, 2010). Moreover, chickens are proven natural pest controllers, reducing the need for chemical alternatives that can harm both our environment and health.
Amending this ordinance would not only improve our dining tables and yards; it also encourages sustainable living and brings us closer to nature. As members of this city, we deserve fair opportunities to choose healthier, greener lifestyle practices. Please sign this petition; let's work together to change our city ordinance and allow for the ownership of chickens on city lots smaller than 2.5 acres.
