As a parent of a current East Bernard High School student—and someone who has raised five children through this district—I’ve seen firsthand how the current dress code shifts focus away from learning and toward control. It enforces outdated rules that do more to micromanage appearance than to prepare students for life beyond school.

As a veteran, I understand the value of discipline. But I also know that respect must be mutual—and that students rise when they’re treated with dignity.

East Bernard ISD’s dress code needs a transformation. We are in an era that celebrates diversity, promotes inclusivity, and prepares young people for a modern world. Yet, the dress code in our district harks back to a time that stifles this progress. It is overwhelmingly gender-biased, runs contrary to contemporary societal standards, and imposes constraints that stifle students’ self-expression.

Real-world success depends on skills like critical thinking, creativity, and individuality. Our dress code, however, undermines these skills by focusing excessively on conformity over competence. Rules banning specific hairstyles or requiring different standards for boys and girls suggest that appearance is valued over appreciation of diversity and individual potential.

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that relaxed dress codes contribute to better school climates. According to data from the National Association of Secondary School Principals, schools that have reformed their dress codes have reported improvements in school morale and student participation in class. This shows that a fair, inclusive dress code does not only foster a positive learning environment but also encourages a sense of belonging and respect among students of all backgrounds.

We call upon the East Bernard ISD school board to engage in an open dialogue with students, parents, and educators to develop a dress code policy that reflects our shared values. This includes eliminating gender-specific requirements, embracing diverse hairstyles, and allowing for student input in creating guidelines that respect individuality while maintaining an environment conducive to learning.
