Modernize and expand public transportation in Stockton
Modernize and expand public transportation in Stockton
The Issue
Growing up in Stockton, public transportation has always been a lifeline for my family and me. It was how we got to school, work, and doctor's appointments when owning a car wasn't an option. Public transportation connected us to opportunities, but over the years, it has become increasingly clear that our city's transit system is failing to meet the needs of its residents.
Stockton's population has grown significantly over the past decade, expanding by over 20%, and yet, our transit system remains outdated and limited. Many neighborhoods still lack reliable bus routes, especially during evenings and weekends, making it difficult for individuals to access essential services, jobs, and education. According to the 2022 American Community Survey, more than 10% of Stockton residents are transportation disadvantaged, further emphasizing the urgency of improving our public transit.
A modernized and expanded public transportation system is essential for Stockton's economic growth and environmental sustainability. By investing in new and improved infrastructure, we can reduce traffic congestion, decrease air pollution, and make our city more equitable for all residents. Reallocating funding to expand bus routes, increase frequency, and introduce new technologies such as real-time tracking apps will make commuting more efficient and accessible.
Moreover, enhancing public transportation will reduce our carbon footprint by encouraging more people to leave their cars at home and opt for eco-friendly alternatives. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, greenhouse gas emissions from transportation account for nearly 29% of total U.S. emissions, making transportation the largest contributor of emissions in the United States. Improving public transit can significantly reduce Stockton's environmental impact.
Please join me in urging the Stockton City Council to prioritize public transportation improvements in the coming fiscal budget. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable future for Stockton. Together, we can create a transportation system that works for everyone. Let's take this step towards progress—sign the petition today.
