Rename George Wallace Tunnel in Mobile, AL

Rename George Wallace Tunnel in Mobile, AL
The Issue
It is time to remove George Wallace’s name from the I-10 Tunnel in Mobile, AL once and for all, and rename it “The Hank Aaron Tunnel”.
Hank Aaron’s legacy, activism and humanitarian efforts is the representation of inclusion and value for all.
While serving 4 terms as the 45th governor of Alabama, George Wallace infamously promoted segregation during his 1963 inaugural address stating “Segregation Now! Segregation Tomorrow! Segregation Forever!”.
He attracted national attention the same year by standing on the steps of the University of Alabama and blocked two African-American students from entering.
George Wallace amplified and created a fiery atmosphere throughout Alabama cities, with tensions fueled by his staunch segregationist views ultimately contributing to significant violent events against African-Americans during the Civil Rights Movement.
Continuing to honor George Wallace posthumously with notoriety of having his name associated with the I-10 tunnel through Mobile, AL is not an American that should be remembered in history. Wallace’s beliefs and infamous speeches do not represent values of equality and inclusion in the current world.
