Tell the Viking's owners to stop supporting poor labor practices on their sites.

The Issue

We ask you to sign this public petition to tell Vikings’ owners that using subcontractors with a history of violations, fines and lawsuits over poor labor practices is unacceptable in any community in Minnesota.

The Wilf family’s MV Eagan Ventures selected subcontractors with poor labor records for Phase 1 of their apartment project in Eagan, Minnesota near the Vikings’ practice facility. Records show  that one subcontractor  allowed severe harassment of black employees, had an employee claim he/she had a gun and could “shoot a n----r a mile away”, settled a lawsuit over a supervisor making a noose and threatening to hang two black employees, and used materials that were non-compliant with Minnesota’s building code violated child labor laws while another subcontractor violated federal wage payment laws, abused immigrant workers, and violated Minnesota’s contractor registration law by hiring or paying unregistered construction contractors.

More information on the subcontractors' records hired by MV Eagan Adventures includes:

  • A supervisor for one of the subcontractors harassed two black employees, including threats that he had a gun and could “shoot a n---r a mile away.” (Found in a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) “The supervisor made a noose out of electrical wire and threatened to hang” the two black employees.  The harassment was witnessed by other supervisors and even after the black employees complained to another supervisor, “no action was taken to stop or prevent the harassment.”  (Source https://www.eeoc.gov/newsroom/eeoc-sues-jl-schwieters-construction-severe-race-harassment This resulted in the subcontractor settling a lawsuit with the EEOC for $125,000.
  • One subcontractor installed exterior lumber that, according to multiple news stories, failed to comply with Minnesota building code for fire safety in four large apartment projects in the Twin Cities, requiring the lumber to be removed and replaced.
  • One subcontractor treated employees as independent contractors and denied 28 employees over $100,000 in wages. This enabled the contractor to offer lower bids to developers and general contractors who share in the profit from exploitation. (See USDOL Case Number 1800777)
  • An investigation that “disclosed child labor violations” from a hired subcontractor of MV Eagan Ventures. (U.S. Department of Labor records, 2016)
  • A violation of Minnesota’s contractor registration law by hiring or paying unregistered construction contractors. (Case Number REG1505-00021/MG)
  • One subcontractor “submitted false and misleading information” in violation of Minnesota’s contractor registration law.  (See Case Number REG1702-00038/MG)
