The Issue
Petition to Reopen Tribal Enrollment or Review Enrollment Policies
We, the undersigned members and descendants of the [Miwok , respectfully request that the Tribal Council and Enrollment Committee review and reconsider current enrollment restrictions.
Many individuals with verifiable lineage to our tribe are being denied membership due to the “closed list” policy. This prevents descendants from participating in our culture, community, and governance, despite their rightful heritage.
We believe it is in the best interest of the tribe to:
Allow qualified descendants to apply for enrollment.
Review and, if necessary, amend enrollment ordinances to ensure fairness and inclusivity.
Provide a transparent and accessible appeals process for enrollment decisions.By supporting this petition, we affirm our commitment to reopening enrollment discussions and ensuring that all descendants with legitimate lineage have the opportunity to be recognized as tribal miwok ] should be reviewed and made more inclusive.
Our Story
When my mother and brother signed up with the tribe, I wasn’t there. I missed that moment, and because of that, I never got the chance to sign my name. I never knew then how much it would hurt later — not just me, but my children too.
My kids are growing up proud of who they are, proud of their blood and where they come from. But they also feel the pain of being left out. They see other Native kids joining programs, learning traditions, and receiving opportunities that are closed to them. They ask me, “Why not us? Why don’t we belong?†And I don’t have the words to answer. All I can do is hold them and feel my heart break.
Because we aren’t enrolled, my children miss out on the help that could make their lives better — things like educational support, healthcare programs, and cultural activities that connect them to their heritage. They feel like they are standing outside a door that should already be open to them. They carry the weight of being told no when, in their hearts, they already know they are part of the tribe.
It’s not just my children. My cousins feel it too. Their father never signed them up, and now they carry the same emptiness, the same wound of being left out. Entire families are living with this pain.
We are suffering because of choices we never had the power to make. My children and I live with that every day. It’s a feeling of being cut away from your roots, of being invisible to the people you know you belong to. No child should grow up feeling that way.
This is our story. This is our truth. All we want is to be whole again.
