Testing requirements for Cometologists and Barbers in the state of Missouri
Why this petition matters
Currently cosmetology and barber students are required to learn subjects such as anatomy and electricity as part of their curriculum to the extent of learning all the bones, muscles, nerves, veins and arteries in the upper torso and extremities, they are also required to learn about circuits and wiring as well as several details about how electricity works not just electrical safety. Cosmetology students have 1500 hours to complete their course and barbers have 1000 hours to complete in the state of Missouri, learning things that do not benefit them should be taken out of the curriculum and things that will tremendously benefit them should be added in, such as a longer business course. As the program sits it takes roughly 6 weeks to get through all of the science courses and only a week to get through the business section. While I certainly agree that the science of infection control, haircolor and perming/ relaxing are very important in the course of study, I feel several of the required hours are something the students will not use and even won't remember a few weeks after testing and the hours could be used to improve the quality of students we as schools are sending out the door, giving them a more successful start after graduation.
