On 31 August 2022, multiple New Zealand media organisations published headlines that the New Zealand Government were introducing a tax on KiwiSaver and referred to it as "KiwiSaver Tax" when this was misleading and false. There was no tax on KiwiSaver instead there was a proposal to make Fund Managers pay GST on their service fees. Fund Managers could choose NOT to pass on these costs so it was misleading to suggest a tax had been applied to KiwiSaver. As a result, hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders now wrongly believe that the Government was going to tax their KiwiSaver contributions. This misinformation may impact the 2023 Election and voter intention and trust in the New Zealand Government as well as undermine public confidence in KiwiSaver. New Zealand media should not continue with the practice of publishing misinforming headlines.
