The Issue
MISD teachers need your help and support. They are being asked to do too much: return to 5 days a week of in-class instruction, while continuing virtual teaching, during a pandemic, and without a seat at the decision making table! We need your signature today in order to show them we support them and care about them, that they are invaluable to our community. Sign today to help!
MISD teachers have been asked to do more and more for our kids since March of 2019. When the Covid pandemic hit Midland, our teachers were tasked with figuring out how to transition into a 100% virtual environment. Midland families were faced with technology issues, lack of equipment and lack of any plan whatsoever. The teachers, principals and other campus staff all came together to figure it out. And they’ve been figuring it out ever since! We allowed students to return to in class learning, first as a hybrid model, and now as a 4 day a week model, while offering a virtual platform as well (MOA). Time and time again, our teachers rose to the occasion and figured it out. More than that, they’ve done so with dignity and grace, rising to every challenge while caring about our students' health, emotional well-being, and their education. As always, our teachers are giving more and more of their own time and resources, and in many cases, having to choose between caring for their own families and showing up to work.
Most MISD teachers are more worn out than ever. They are tired, financially stressed, and rightfully angry. They have not been given a say in what happens at district campuses, nor how it happens, only told what they are expected to do.
We are now in a position where we are again asking our teachers to do more and give us more. This week marks the return to 5 days a week in school schedule. This also coincides with a rising number of Covid cases and a lot of quarantined students. Our teachers are again faced with longer hours, and more problems to solve.
We hope to garner your support for our teachers, and to show them we care and support them. We ask for the following:
Most MISD teachers are opposed to the district’s decision to expand to phase 5 during an increase in covid cases in our district. There are so many campuses with entire groups out on quarantine due to exposure or positive tests. That’s not always evident when only case numbers are reported. We request a return to phase 4 until cases are brought under control and workable solutions have been devised for MOA.
Teachers deserve a seat at the decision making table. Committees can be created for each campus that are made up of teachers, principals and department chairs that have legitimate decision making power on major district decision. These committees should NOT be limited to giving advice or feedback, but have an actual VOTE on what happens in the school. These should be separate from committees which currently exist to give feedback.
