On April 21, 2016, Prince (full name Prince Rogers Nelson), the Minnesota-born musical and cultural icon, passed away at his Minnesota home at the age of 57. The immense grief over his unexpected death was shared world wide but had it's epicenter in his home state where he began his meteoric rise to super-stardom. Prince had become synonymous with the color purple due to his affinity for the color in his wardrobe and the title of his hit song "Purple Rain" (which shares it's title with the movie starring Prince). In a memorial gesture on the day of his passing, many of Minnesota's notable monuments and structures were illuminated in the artist's signature color. I believe that Minnesota should immortalize it's legendary native son by adopting the hue of deep violet as a state color. By doing this, we as a state can show our love and thanks to a man who, no matter the level of fame and fortune he attained, was proud to call Minnesota his home.
