A Midtown Light Rail Line in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, MN.

A Midtown Light Rail Line in Minneapolis and Saint Paul, MN.
The Issue
Currently, Lake Street in South Minneapolis and Marshall Avenue in St. Paul serve together as one of the busiest mass transit corridors in the entire Twin Cities Metro Area. According to twincities.com, an estimated 10,000 people ride the popular route 21 every weekday, and that’s even though it averages an unimpressive 10 miles per hour.
Imagine a train, running alongside the existing Midtown Greenway, below street level, stopping only for designated stops, and interacting with traffic only a handful of times all the way across town. Such a train would be able to cover 20 MPH, or more.
lightrailnow.org lists these speeds as not only possible, but likely for a state of the art LRT line, making an important and popular mass transit route compétitive with, or even faster than, the same commute by car.
All while using clean, safe, electric energy.
So what’s there to lose? Let’s convince Metro Transit, the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz that a Midtown LRT is our ticket to the future and a sure-fire way to improve upon an award-winning mass transit system in the Twin Cities.
Thanks for reading, and happy riding!
