10,000+ Support 100-120km/h limit on T&T highways, with Appropriate Slowdowns for Complexity

Safe Drivers for Efficiency

May 9, 2016
Support for the petition to raise the national speed limit for highways to 100-120km/h with appropriate slowdowns has now doubled since our last update a less than a week ago, with 10,000 people signing.
We encourage everyone to obey the road traffic laws and posted speed limit signs as enforcement strategies are deployed. Even at 100-120km/h the same measures will be needed to maintain control on our nations roads and minimise road traffic fatalities, which is a benefit we all agree with. Let us demonstrate to the authorities that we are on-board with the new culture of safe driving.
Also, taking an interest in our country's development is something we all need to participate in. If we, the citizens do not find constructive ideas for our nation's development, then "idle hands may go to work". Potentially, we could see first world class budgets consumed without meaningful benefit to the nation, as has happened under many administrations in our young 50-year-old country. So, with the past behind us, and every political organisation choosing to sling mud at election time, we the citizens need to look past the deliberate divisions and help identify and/or contribute to how and why we would like our nation to develop.
Despite the fact that the last 10-20 years have proven that there are many drivers who have proven that our highways are in fact capable of accomodating very high speeds, there are an number of considerations that have to be made when designing road systems for regular higher speed traffic flow. We welcome any modern improvements that engineers, researchers and road safety experts are willing to recommend to achieve safe regular traffic flow, at more efficient speeds and look forward to being a part of this process as citizens.
Remember there are roughly some 600,000-700,000 vehicles on the roads of T&T, and in a matter of days, 10,000 people have already signed on. Because of this we have moved from a position of this issue not being recognised, to one where it will be a topic of discussion in upcoming public consultations with the Ministry of Transport.
Please sign and share this petition unless you wish to remain legally capped at 80km//h forever.
