14,000+ supporters as MOT of T&T considers increase to 100km/h!

We would like to thank everyone who signed and shared this petition! Your voice has made a difference and we consider each one of you to be a safe driver for efficiency. The government has acknowledged that there has been a public outcry for an increase in the speed limit to 100-120km/h in specific and appropriate areas of the highway. Their responses have been sensible: that they are willing to hear all voices in this democracy, that public safety will not be compromised and that they are employing scientific means to inform their consideration. They have also indicated that they would be willing to view any additional external scientific evidence that can validate in increase that the public may be able to provide. Enforcement strategies continue and as usual, we encourage motorists to obey the current law. We, the motoring public wish to thank the government for hearing us out. A few recent reports have stated that the Minister had not seen any petition and as such we have intentions of submitting the outline of this petition and the list of signatures so that it can stand for the record that there was in fact, documented public interest in a speed limit increase. Drivers of pickups remain unclear as to wether they will also be allowed a similar increase based on scientific data and findings, they are asking for 80km/h to be considered, while 65km/h be maintained for heavier vehicles, citing that the weight of a pickup is similar to that of a P-registered SUV, when NOT carrying payload. A number of items for scientific consideration have been outlined by an informed user on facebook as follows: [Mike Shand, on facebook says] /// "Methodologies for setting speed limits typically are designed to result in recommended speed limits that: • Are related to crash risk; • Provide a reasonable basis for enforcement; • Are fair in the context of traffic law; and • Are accepted as reasonable by a majority of road users. • The selected methodology is generally applicable on all road types and capable of being implemented with existing resources. Factors that affect safe speeds along roadways, and also influence the speed selected by motorists, include: • A vehicle's mechanical condition and characteristics; • Driving ability/capabilities; • Traffic volume: vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles; • Weather and visibility; • Roadway design elements, including: • Road function/purpose; • Lane and shoulder width; • Horizontal and vertical curves; • Available sight distances; • Driveways with restricted visibility and other roadside developments; • High driveway density; • Rural residential or developed areas; and • Paved or improved shoulders. • Pavement conditions; and • Crash frequency and severity. /// We would like to suggest that you personally consider the currently available facilities in T&T for improving your driving skills through reviewing the regulations which are now available online, driver simulation and training, defensive driving courses, and entry-level motorsport for building your reflexes and car control skills. We also encourage you to "drive for the other driver" and to be courteous to one another, especially in built up areas. We can do our part in building better drivers. If and when an increase is implemented, we encourage everyone to obey the law regarding all posted posted speed limits in various areas.
