I am a 30 year old woman with what is considered a mild disability. I have chronic pain, I live in almost constant pain in my back, hips and legs. Despite this, I am a part-time student and minimum wage, part-time essential worker, working at our communitys only Gas Station which is located on a busy highway (covid-19 risk). I am also receiving Provincial Disability from The Ministry of Social Development, this is a long-term subsidy for long-term disability, which I use for paying my rent. Currently, PWD only allows me to earn $1,000 per month before my disability cheque is garnished any preceding amount. Right now, working 4 shifts per week, if they are all 8 hour shifts I have brought home as much as $900 in a biweekly pay period. If I receive two $900 payckeques, my disability cheque is garnished $800!. Essentially, these are hours worked that cannot go towards my bills and upkeep of quality of life. When all is said and done, nearly half of these hours are worked for free at no fault to my employer. All Disabled Essential Workers on Provincial Assistance are in this position. It's time our voices are HEARD and NOT IGNORED! Please sign this petition to have the Earning Allowance Increased to $2000 to match today's current minimum wage. We should be able to work a full-time minimum wage job and still collect our benefits. We should only lose our benefits once we get closer to the poverty line ($30,000 per year).
